Barkat Hussain, Scientist by Profession is working on the idea on waterless technologies for insect pest management in cold desert region of Ladakh. Scarcity of water and inaccessible roads to apple and apricot orchards is a constraint for the management of codling moth in Ladakh. Codling moth is a quarantine pest. This leads to ban on all fresh fruits. Subsequently, the social taboos of not applying insecticides on insects in Leh region, inclined him to explore the novel ways for its management. Such precarious situations, motivated Dr. Barkat Hussain to think alternatives for the management of codling moth.
The demonstration of pheromone and pheromone dispenser technologies provide a ray of hope for the management of codling moth and other insect pests in Ladakh and J&K. This technology is water less, saves water, trap and traplesss technology, safe to honey bees, natural enemies, no health hazards and environmentally sound technology for upliftment of the horticulture sector in the region. We have demonstrated this technology in large area as an Area Wide Management Programme (AWMP). Smells are surer than sounds and pheromone for future is a benign technology and a notable innovation and to all those insect pests which are threatening the harvest for the endless users in a big way.I have demonstrated pheromone dispenser technology for the management of codling moth, fruit flies and Shoot and fruit borer on brinjal in India. In some places where management options were difficult due to social taboos I got success there by using scientific diplomacy, that might be new to world. Also provided new reports from India and Himalayan region which could be exploited for pest management to reduce the health hazards and insecticides.Solution to insect problems and to reduce insecticide usage as green technologies.Further,to establish degree day models and biofix in India to churn the calender application of insecticides just to shun the calender approach of insecticides and to advocate precision pest management solutions through array of green technologies.
